P3 @ Mokoia Intermediate
We are a class of Year 7 and 8 digital learners. We will share our learning journey with you on this site. We expect students to edit their own writing so sometimes what you will see is not error free but a work in progress! Mokoia is a community that values respect, honesty, relationships and learning. Please leave us a comment to encourage us. Enjoy!

Science and Maths
We have been having lots of fun in P3 this week!
We looked at chemical reactions to begin our science unit,
We mixed Redbull and milk together and made predictions (hypothesis) on what would happen.
After recording the results we came up with an I wonder question...
Mrs Hay came in to view our experiments and posed the question 'Would the same reaction occur if you altered the colour?' which sent everyone into a flurry of I wonder...
Next we added food colour to milk and a small amount of dish washing liquid.
We followed the same I predict, results and I wonder format.
It was a very exciting lesson which led into what other experiments could we do and school and how could we alter today's experiments to achieve different results.
Maths/Technology:
Each group had 5 people (Leader, Scribe, Questioner, Timer, Resource Collector).
Challenge 1: Using only one bag of mini marshmallows and one packet of spaghetti construct the tallest tower in a 45 minute time period.
Challenge 2: Using only 1 roll of toilet paper create the largest area and perimeter you can (each sheet of toilet paper must be touching).
There was lots of team building, leadership, supporting each other, math language and fun being had!
Challenge 1 was definitely the class favourite, although this may have been purely due to being able to eat the marshmallows at the end!

Wonder Novel Study
In class this term we are looking at the novel 'Wonder'. It is about a boy with a deformed face who is entering school for the first time. It is an amazing story and one I recommend to all readers. Today we learnt how to create our own Tagxedo's, we discovered how to change the shape, font, colours and shape to personalise our key words. Check them out on our blogs listed down the right hand side of this page.

The Language of Success and Making Thoughtful Comments
Today we talked about writing good posts.
They need:
1. an exciting title that captures attention
2. Uses 5W+H - who, what, where, when, why, how
3. Good surface features:
- punctuation
- structure - paragraphs
- spelling
4. "Language of success"
- no text speak
- Write like you are writing for the Prime Minister
Here are some tips from Mrs Yollis' kids:
We listened to Mrs Yollis' students tell us about making good comments:
1. Compliment the writer. Everyone likes nice things said about their work.
2. Add some factual information.
3. Make a connection. Tell the writer your experiences of the same event.
4. Ask relevant questions. This makes the writer want to write more.
5. Proofread the piece for the writer.

Waiata
Today we learnt a new waiata - 'Ka Whiti Mai'
This term we are focusing on Manaakitanga in our PB4L and Maori Medium time.
We are currently working on what Manaakitanga means to us and what it looks like in our classroom and around our school.
We will be posting these on our blog along with some artwork over the next few weeks.
What is your favourite waiata?
The first signs of life
It has been 1 week and 1 day since we first made our grass heads.
Students noticed this morning that some had sprouted hair and others had sprouted beards!
Watch this space for more exciting posts on the progress of our grass heads.
