We have been having lots of fun in P3 this week!
We looked at chemical reactions to begin our science unit,
We mixed Redbull and milk together and made predictions (hypothesis) on what would happen.
After recording the results we came up with an I wonder question...
Mrs Hay came in to view our experiments and posed the question 'Would the same reaction occur if you altered the colour?' which sent everyone into a flurry of I wonder...
Next we added food colour to milk and a small amount of dish washing liquid.
We followed the same I predict, results and I wonder format.
It was a very exciting lesson which led into what other experiments could we do and school and how could we alter today's experiments to achieve different results.
Maths/Technology:
Each group had 5 people (Leader, Scribe, Questioner, Timer, Resource Collector).
Challenge 1: Using only one bag of mini marshmallows and one packet of spaghetti construct the tallest tower in a 45 minute time period.
Challenge 2: Using only 1 roll of toilet paper create the largest area and perimeter you can (each sheet of toilet paper must be touching).
There was lots of team building, leadership, supporting each other, math language and fun being had!
Challenge 1 was definitely the class favourite, although this may have been purely due to being able to eat the marshmallows at the end!
Hmmm! Not surprised about the marshmellows! Where are mine?
ReplyDeleteGreat to see your blog up and running P3 - well done. What was the main learning intention of your lesson?
I like to see students excited about their learning. I can't wait for the next post. Thank you for including me as a "reader".
We were learning to make predictions (hypothesis) and ask questions (I wonder...). We also touched on how to record down data in a precise and unemotional way. It was very exciting!
DeleteI liked the ideas that you mentioned of the lessons for Maths/Technology because they would lead to having team building which is a really important way to start the year. I like the spagetti/marshmellow idea I think thats quite clever and may ever borrow that idea for my classroom.

Wow P3, it looks like you had an amazing time. I left a riddle for P2. I see that your school is called Mokoia Intermediate. But I live in Mokoia. What part of NZ might that be in. A place to start maybe by our school blog www.auroa.school.nz. Good luck
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a really fun week of learning. Do you have your students reflect after they do their projects? Do they have a blog set up to share?

They either reflect on their blogs which are on the right hand side of this page or they use their reflective journals. Depends on what we are trying to achieve. This lesson we were trying to ask questions and make predictions.
DeleteThat was cool because you did experiments. I really enjoy doing experiments. by Arjun at Linwood College
ReplyDeletei like doing experiments.
ReplyDeleteSo do I.

Cool! That tower challenge sounds like fun. How high was the tallest tower?
